What is wrong with human beings???? Okay, wait, too much to start so let me get to my point: Why do we get such enjoyment out of seeing someone fail at something or go through a bad patch??
Current case in point: Charlie Sheen. Let me start by saying, I haven't really been "following" any of the Sheen drama that's been going on. From what I've seen in ads, heard on the radio, etc., etc., he's currently undergoing some sort of drama around his drug addiction and saying some crazy things.
Root of the current fascination with Sheen: a drug problem. So let's get this straight, the guy's addicted to drugs to the point that he's hindering his regular life, yet people are mocking him, making jokes about him, and remixing his comments into YouTube videos and songs. What about this is funny? I just don't get it.
Alright, another case in point: the reporter at the Grammys (or the Golden Globes) who was talking and then suddenly wasn't making any sense.... Again, people were mocking her, passing the video along the internet and laughing at the situation. I decided to check out the video to see what all the "fuss" was about. While watching the video, you can see pure fear and panic in her eyes as she grasped at words and any attempt to make sense of what she was saying. She was then rushed to the hospital, yet we are making fun of this?!
I don't get it. I just don't understand what our fascination with people bombing. Is it to make us feel better about ourselves? Because really, I think finding things like this funny really says a lot about you.... and you should actually feel worse about yourself than you were hoping.
My wish: Think about the next time someone is having the worst day of their life and it happens to be caught in the public eye, if you really want to join everyone making fun of their bad day.
